HISTORY

In June of 1953, James P. Schafer and an army buddy, Chuck Selby opened one of the first rental stores in the country.  Chuck left the business after 1 year and three of Jim’s family bought Chuck’s portion of the business.  Though not currently a part of the business, they – Walter and Thomas Schafer and Bernard Korty – each contributed greatly to the business.  Jim Schafer passed away February 19, 2000 and his wife, Ruth Schafer and two of his daughters, Nancy Stacy and Karen O’Leary are the current owners. We have been in the same location since the beginning, though we have grown and changed over the years.  Knowing that we would outgrow the original building, we would buy property in the area as it came up for sale.  Eventually, Midwest Rentals covered almost an entire city block, with land on both sides of 5th Street. In the early years, we handled tool, light construction, medical and party equipment in the same building with the same personnel.  In 1985, a 10,000-sq. ft. building was constructed next to the original in order to house the party goods.  We found that specialization facilitated growth in both areas. In the late 1970’s we saw a need for portable restrooms and added portable restrooms to our line. Units were being brought into town from 60 miles away. Midwest Portable Storage and Restrooms started with 22 units using the Rich Mac System.  A 300 gal waste tank and 100-gallon fresh water tank. This system was a slide in unit that fit into our first service technician, Paul Fassnacht, truck. With growth came larger trucks and more units.  Our present location is at 52 Sycamore St. We purchased this site to house the growing division.  We now have a fleet of 5 trucks with the capacity of 1100-gal waste and 450 gal fresh water.

FOCUS

Mission Statement: To give our customers a clean, sanitary portable restrooms for their job site, special event or Party.  To service the restroom every week, preferably on the same day of the week.  The portable restoom is to be in good working order. Respect our customer’s property and the property of Midwest Portable Restrooms. Our customers include contractors, schools, sporting events, recreational events, festivals, and outdoor weddings.

STRENGTHS

We provide excellent service and equipment. Portable restrooms provide significant labor savings on construction sites due to loss labor when the worker leaves the job site to look for restrooms elsewhere.  We can work with special event coordinators to figure the amount of restrooms needed for the amount of people expected. This will help keep the general public at your event and not need to seek additional restrooms off site. Not only do we have the standard construction units, but we also have units designed to be lifted to the top of a building under construction, we can also set up a job trailer to have flushing toilets even when the site does not have access to water or a sanitary sewer.  For the public events, the “Special Event Trailers” have flushing toilets, sinks, heat, air conditioning, electric lights, and a radio.  We also have self-contained hand-washing stations and VIP units, which are also self contained flushing units with a sink, great for outdoor wedding receptions.
